The rise of microdramas

Short drama apps made roughly $750 million in Q1 2026. A look at the apps that lead the market and what brands can borrow from the format.

A microdrama is a short vertical drama series with episodes of about one to two minutes, made for phones and ending on a cliffhanger almost every time. The format started in China and went global through apps like ReelShort and DramaBox, which each made close to $140 million from in-app purchases in the first quarter of 2026 alone (Sensor Tower).

How big are microdramas in 2026?

  • Short drama apps made roughly $750 million from in-app purchases worldwide in Q1 2026, up 20% from a year earlier.
  • They passed 850 million downloads in the same quarter, up 140% year over year.
  • People spent an average of 25 minutes a day in these apps by April 2026, up 85% since January 2025. Streaming apps sit at about 35 minutes.
  • Southeast Asia (32%), Latin America (23%), and India (22%) drove most Q1 2026 downloads, while the US led on revenue.

The time figure is the one that stands out. At 25 minutes a day, apps built on one- to two-minute episodes are already close to streaming apps.

All four figures come from Sensor Tower's State of Short Drama Apps 2026. In China, where the format started, microdramas drew about 662 million viewers and more than 50 billion yuan (about $7 billion) in 2024 (Wikipedia).

Where did microdramas come from?

Microdramas grew out of Chinese web fiction and the short-video boom on Douyin and Kuaishou around 2018. China's broadcast regulator recognized them as their own genre in 2020. ReelShort brought the format to the US in 2022, and DramaBox followed in 2023 (Wikipedia).

Why do microdramas work?

  • Every minute or two, an episode ends on a question. Stopping there feels harder than tapping next.
  • Everything is built for the phone: vertical 9:16, close-ups, subtitles, and no slow intros.
  • The stories are familiar. Billionaire romance, revenge, and hidden identities are among the most common genres.
  • Viewers pay per episode, around $0.30 to $0.50 each, or $10 to $15 for a full series, mixed with free episodes and ads.
  • Production is fast. A US production typically costs $150,000 to $250,000 and shoots 50 to 70 or more episodes in 7 to 10 days.

How do brands use microdramas?

Drama apps need a steady stream of ads, so every series gets cut into short clips that open on its strongest moment. Brands can also fund their own series and write the product into the story, so the ad becomes something people binge.

Either way, it is the same job as good UGC and the same idea as UGCmaxxing: win the first three seconds, then make people want the next clip.
